West Jordan, UT

The city of West Jordan, UT, is a rapidly growing suburb of Salt Lake City, named after the nearby Jordan River. It ranks the fourth largest city in Utah, with an estimated population of 112,000 people living across an area of 31 square miles.

West Jordan was established by Mormon settlers in 1848, then incorporated almost a century later in 1941. In the early years, West Jordan based its economy on agriculture, mills and mining, including the first leather tannery west of the Mississippi River.

Population growth exploded in the 1970s and has continued ever since. West Jordan today continues to manage the related concerns of transportation and school overcrowding. Current major construction projects include a master-planned development called Jordan Landing, in addition to a new central area called Briarwood in old downtown West Jordan.
