Sandy, UT

The city of Sandy, UT, is located in Salt Lake County, at the base of the Wasatch Mountains about 13 miles south of Salt Lake City. The population is estimated at close to 94,000 people, ranking Sandy as the sixth largest city in Utah, covering a land area of about 22 square miles.

Sandy was founded in 1871 and incorporated in 1893. The origin of the name Sandy has always remained uncertain, with one theory that it came from the area’s thirsty soil, and another that the city was named for the engineer who ran the first train line into the region. The railroad was significant in determining the course of Sandy’s development.

Today, Sandy is home to the Shops at South Town shopping mall, as well as Rio Tinto Stadium, the host of Real Salt Lake soccer home games. The city is currently developing a new resort-style city center called The Cairns.
